Virtual Wingspan Game Night
IS ON HIATUS FOR THE SUMMER!
We will return in the fall, so watch for more information then.
Birdability knows the importance of virtual social opportunities to people who experience disabilities and health concerns. It can be difficult to socialize when you have an access challenge, and that is why we’re bringing the popular bird-themed board game, Wingspan, to monthly games nights on Zoom!
Created by Elizabeth Hargrave and developed by Stonemaier Games, Wingspan is a game of strategy that features birds with powers that represent their real-life characteristics. An article from National Audubon sums up the game best “Wingspan players take on the role of bird enthusiasts aiming to attract avian visitors to their wildlife preserve. The heart of the game is its deck of 170 illustrated bird cards, each depicting a North American species. Up to five players take turns placing these cards into their appropriate habitat, collecting food, laying eggs, or drawing new cards, with each action unlocking new resources. It’s what’s known in board game parlance as an engine-building game—one in which players try to create an increasingly effective system for generating points. The game lasts about an hour, and the player with the most points wins.”
Wingspan debuted in 2019 as a physical board game, but has since come to the virtual world. It is available for online play via Steam, Switch, Xbox, iOS, and Android thanks to the game developer Monster Couch.
To participate in Birdability’s monthly Wingspan Game Night, you will need to have Wingspan on any of the above digital platforms. When it’s time for Wingspan Game Night, you will join our Zoom call and get put into Zoom breakout rooms in teams of 5 players or less. This is where you can share your Wingspan player name and play a game with the people in your group! We suggest joining Zoom using a device separate from the one you will use to play the game, so that you can see the Zoom call on screen and enjoy the company of the folks in your group!
Note: We will only use the base pack of Wingspan for Wingspan Game Night, as exciting as the expansion packs are, their usage may confuse players who are only familiar with the base game.
Visit Stonemeir Games’ F&Q to learn more about Wingspan and view a video of how it’s played. If you’re unfamiliar with how to play Wingspan, we suggest playing the tutorial that is available in the digital versions of the game prior to Birdability’s Wingspan Game Night.
