TOUGH BROAD is New York Times best-selling author Caroline Paul’s (she/her) quest to understand not just how to live a dynamic life in a changing body, but why we must. She dives deep into the current research on getting older, highlighting the results with outdoor adventures that range from flying a gyrocopter, to scuba diving, to learning to swim, to walking in a park. She interviews women like enthusiastic birder Virginia Rose, whose experiences help us gain greater insight into our own physical and emotional health as we age, showing that our advancing years are no reason for us to sell ourselves short. TOUGH BROAD is a high-spirited call for women to embrace the outdoors, not back away from it, in our fifties, sixties, seventies and beyond, casting our futures in a new and dazzling light.

Virginia Rose (she/her) is the founder of Birdability, whose mission is to share the joys of birding with people who have disabilities or health concerns; to help make birding locations accessible and birding communities welcoming and inclusive. Virginia was paralyzed in a horse-riding accident at the age of 14. She has used a wheelchair for 51 years. At age 44, she began birding and discovered her best self in nature. She leads accessible bird outings for Travis Audubon in Austin and at various birding festivals nationwide. As a retired high school English teacher, she is passionate about bringing the same joy, empowerment and community she found in birding and nature to others who have disabilities or health concerns.
