Birding for Mental Health: New Video and Resources Now Available
Birding, the practice of observing or enjoying birds in their natural habitats, offers more than just an opportunity to connect with nature—it provides significant mental and cognitive health benefits. At Birdability, we are dedicated to making birding accessible to everyone, ensuring that people of all abilities and health concerns can experience these benefits firsthand.
We’re excited to share the recording of one of Birdability Week 2024’s most impactful sessions: The Mental Health Benefits of Birding Panel. This panel features insights from Ann Marie Geiger, Tammah Watts, Holly Merker, and Sheridan Alford, who each bring unique perspectives on how birding can support emotional well-being, resilience, and healing, particularly for people with disabilities or health concerns. It’s a must-watch for anyone curious about how spending time with birds and in nature can enrich their lives!
This session recording is now part of our expanding mental health resources on the Birdability website. Visit Birdability’s Mental Health Benefits page to find resources for understanding and supporting mental wellness through birding, including a literature review of current research on the subject and a guidance document that outlines the ways that the health benefits of birding might show up for folks with disabilities, as well as tips on making birding more accessible and inclusive for all.
As we continue to grow our knowledge base, we’re thrilled to offer these resources to support our community in making birding a tool for wellness and connection. Dive into the panel recording, explore the new resources, and let’s keep building an inclusive birding community that celebrates both nature and each other.
